The Vision: Capturing the Ethereal
The vision was clear: to capture the sublime beauty of Snowdonia during a cloud inversion, a rare and fleeting phenomenon where low-lying clouds blanket the valleys, leaving the mountain peaks soaring above like islands in a sea of mist. This required meticulous planning, months spent studying weather patterns, and years waiting for the perfect conditions to align.
The Challenge: Timing and Terrain
Capturing a cloud inversion is a delicate dance with nature. It demands precise timing, as the conditions can change rapidly. The terrain itself presents a significant challenge. The locations I chose, including the PYG track and the dramatic Crib Goch route, required long hikes and challenging climbs, often in harsh weather. Cold fingers, numb from the biting wind, struggled to operate camera equipment, while the unpredictable weather tested my resolve.
The Process: From Mountain Top to Editing Suite
The actual shooting spanned two days of intense activity. Each timelapse sequence required hours of continuous shooting, capturing the subtle movements of the clouds and the changing light. The footage was then meticulously processed, stabilised, and edited, a process that consumed countless hours in the editing suite. Every frame was carefully examined, ensuring the final product lived up to the grandeur of the subject.
The Reward: A Glimpse of Heaven
The result is a collection of 17 timelapse sequences that transport viewers to the heart of Snowdonia's majestic landscape. Clouds waft over the PYG track, creating a sense of ethereal movement. From the dizzying heights of Crib Goch, the mountains of Snowdonia and the Welsh Valleys are enveloped in a sea of clouds, creating a truly heavenly scene. Snowdon summit, Y Lliwedd, Carnedd Ugain, and the entire Snowdon Massif are showcased in all their glory, bathed in a light that is both sublime and otherworldly.
