Gloucester Docks Archive Stock Footage: A Moody Dawn in 2018
There's a special kind of atmosphere around old docks, especially at dawn. The water is often still, reflecting the first hints of colour in the sky, while the solid, historic warehouses stand silent sentinel, holding echoes of past industry and trade. Gloucester Docks, the most inland port in the UK, has this atmosphere in abundance. It's a place where maritime history meets the heart of the English countryside, dominated by the magnificent Gloucester Cathedral rising in the background.
Back in 2018, I had the chance to capture this unique location with my drone during those quiet early morning hours. The result is Clip Pack #208 - Gloucester Docks Archive Drone Footage (2018), a collection that offers a specific snapshot in time, capturing the docks under moody, atmospheric conditions.
A Glimpse Back to 2018: What's in the Pack?
It's important to note straight away that this is archive footage. It was captured using the drone technology available to me back in 2018. While still shot in 4K UHD and offering valuable perspectives, the image quality and drone capabilities won't quite match footage captured on the latest state-of-the-art equipment I use today. Because of this, I'm offering this pack at a bargain archive price of just £150.
Despite its age, the footage in this pack (11 drone clips, just over 2 minutes) has a unique quality:
Atmospheric Dawn Capture: All the clips were filmed exclusively during the dawn hours. This means moody skies, often murky or overcast conditions typical of early mornings near the water, but punctuated by moments of beautiful sunrise colour reflecting on the dock basins.
Historic Docks Setting: The aerial views explore the layout of the docks – the water-filled basins, the distinctive architecture of the Victorian warehouses lining the quays, and the general feel of this historic inland port.
Majestic Cathedral Backdrop: In several shots, the towering presence of Gloucester Cathedral provides a stunning, moody backdrop, grounding the industrial heritage of the docks with centuries of ecclesiastical history. Seeing the cathedral loom through the murky dawn light is quite something.
Unique 2018 Snapshot: This footage provides a valuable visual record of Gloucester Docks as they appeared in 2018, useful for projects needing specific period B-roll or documenting changes over time.

The Value of Archive Footage
Why offer older footage? Because sometimes, authenticity and historical context are key. For documentary filmmakers working on projects about Gloucester's history, maritime heritage, or UK inland ports, this 2018 footage provides a specific visual reference point. For creators of historical dramas or features needing establishing shots that feel right for a particular recent period, archive material can be invaluable. The moody atmosphere captured also lends itself well to more creative or atmospheric sequences. And at £150, it's an incredibly accessible way to acquire unique, professionally shot (even if slightly dated tech-wise) aerial footage with broadcast rights included.
Contrasting Gloucester: Nearby Cheltenham
Gloucester Docks, with their robust industrial heritage and slightly gritty, atmospheric feel, offer a fascinating contrast to nearby Cheltenham, just a short hop away in Gloucestershire. While the docks speak of trade and industry, Cheltenham evokes Regency elegance, spa town history, and the refined excitement of its famous racecourse. I also have archive footage from Cheltenham Racecourse (captured in 2016, Clip Pack #113) and more recent footage of Cheltenham town centre (Clip Pack #179), showcasing its architecture and vibrant atmosphere. Using footage from both locations could create a compelling visual narrative about the diversity within Gloucestershire – the working heritage of the docks versus the sophisticated charm of the spa town and racecourse.
Licensing and Quality Notes
The footage in Clip Pack #208 is provided in 4K UHD resolution. While captured professionally, please do review the previews carefully, keeping in mind it was shot with 2018 drone technology. As always, the pack comes with my straightforward royalty-free license, including use for broadcast television and film with no extra fees for 4K or circulation limits (Full T&Cs apply).
