Snowdonia Stock Footage: Conquering the Carneddau – Wales' Wildest Giants Through My Lens
Snowdonia National Park. Eryri. It’s a name synonymous with rugged mountains, dramatic landscapes, and often, utterly relentless weather. While Snowdon itself draws the crowds, and the jagged peaks of the Glyderau offer thrilling scrambles, there's another range within the park that holds a unique allure for those seeking vastness, solitude, and a true sense of wildness: The Carneddau.
Stretching north and east from the Ogwen Valley, the Carneddau form the largest contiguous area of high ground over 3,000 feet (914m) south of the Scottish Highlands. These aren't sharp, pointy peaks like their neighbours across the valley; they are huge, rolling mountain plateaus, broad ridges connecting whale-backed summits, often feeling remote and exposed. Hiking here involves covering significant distances across challenging terrain, often far from roads or easy escape routes. It's a landscape that demands respect and rewards persistence with truly epic views and a profound sense of space.
Capturing the essence of the Carneddau on film requires more than a quick day trip. It demands multi-day expeditions, carrying heavy camera gear alongside camping equipment, navigating complex terrain in changeable conditions, and having the patience to wait for the light to reveal the landscape's grandeur. It involves tough climbs, boggy ground, scrambling over rocks, and the simple necessity of finding water and fuel (often a Wispa Gold, in my case!). It's exactly this kind of immersive, challenging filming trip that resulted in Clip Pack #188 - The Carneddau, Snowdonia National Park Stock Footage. This extensive collection (207 clips!) is the culmination of significant effort, designed to provide filmmakers and producers with authentic, high-quality visuals of this incredible, often overlooked, part of Snowdonia.

Exploring the Carneddau Range: Peaks and Plateaus
Clip Pack #188 focuses on the southern section of the Carneddau, accessed from the Ogwen Valley, and includes ascents of several key summits:
Pen yr Ole Wen (978m): Often the first major peak encountered when approaching from Ogwen. Its southern face, overlooking Llyn Ogwen and directly opposite Tryfan, is steep and rocky, offering fantastic scrambling routes. The summit provides breathtaking panoramic views. My drone footage in this pack captures these rocky slopes magnificently lit by sunlight, soaring high above the Ogwen Valley, and revealing the dramatic relationship between Pen yr Ole Wen and the Glyderau range across the valley.
Carnedd Dafydd (1044m): Connected to Pen yr Ole Wen by a broad, sweeping ridge, climbing Carnedd Dafydd involves steady walking across the high plateau. The views from the ridge walk are immense, looking down into deep valleys and across to distant peaks. Tripod shots capture the scale of this high-level traverse, while drone shots provide context, showing the ridge stretching out towards the next objective.
Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m): The highest peak in the Carneddau and the second highest in Wales after Snowdon. Reaching Carnedd Llewelyn feels like entering the true heart of the range. It's remote, expansive, and offers unparalleled 360-degree views on a clear day, often encompassing Snowdon, the Glyderau, Tryfan, the Conwy Valley, and even out towards Anglesey. Capturing this summit, often involving navigating challenging terrain and potentially poor visibility, is a key part of the pack.
The Ogwen Valley: Gateway to Adventure
Many of the shots in this pack use the famous Ogwen Valley as a stunning backdrop or starting point. This deep glacial valley, flanked by the Carneddau to the north and the Glyderau to the south, is one of the most dramatic and accessible parts of Snowdonia.
Llyn Ogwen: The footage captures the lake glistening in the sunlight, its surface reflecting the surrounding peaks. Drone shots soar above it, while tripod shots capture details along its rocky shoreline.
Views Across to the Glyderau: A significant feature of the Carneddau footage is the incredible view across the Ogwen Valley to the instantly recognisable, jagged peaks of the Glyderau range. You'll see Tryfan looking particularly awesome and imposing from this perspective, alongside Glyder Fach, Glyder Fawr, Y Garn, and the dramatic slash of the Devil’s Kitchen (Twll Du) above Llyn Idwal. These mountains form a constant, rugged counterpoint to the broader slopes of the Carneddau.
A Multi-Faceted Look: Drone, Tripod, and Timelapse
To truly capture the Carneddau experience, I utilised a range of filming techniques, resulting in a diverse pack with over 41 minutes of 4K UHD footage:
Amazing Drone Views (55 clips): The drone is essential for conveying the sheer scale here. Expect unparalleled perspectives soaring over the vast ridges and plateaus, revealing the deep valleys, capturing Llyn Ogwen shimmering below, highlighting Pen yr Ole Wen's magnificent rocky slopes catching the sunlight, and providing crucial context by showing the Carneddau in relation to the Glyderau and Snowdon. Shots include dynamic rises, cinematic reveals, wide establishing views perfect for scene-setting, background plates, and detailed aerials exploring cliff edges and summit cairns. Footage captures both bright sunny days with dappled light on the slopes and sequences under more moody, cloudy skies.
Immersive Tripod & Hiking Footage (144 clips): This is where the pack documents the real journey and effort involved. Follow along tough, hard climbs and scrambles over difficult, rocky terrain. Experience POV shots of hiking boots tackling wet trails, navigating energy-sapping boggy ground, crossing traditional wooden stiles over old dry stone walls that crisscross the lower slopes, and carefully climbing down steep, rocky ledges. You'll see authentic moments captured on tripod: collecting fresh water from mountain streams (and yes, even a bracing wash or wild swim!), the essential morale-boosting snack break (my trusty Wispa Gold making an appearance!), and simply taking in the awesome mountain views from the summits after a hard climb. Shots featuring me hiking and interacting with the environment are included and fully model-released at no extra cost, adding narrative potential for adventure or travelogue pieces. The footage also captures the varied textures of the Carneddau landscape – the rocky summit stones, rounded grassy hills giving way to steep rocky edges, tufts of long grass, scattered boulders, patches of heather and fern, and the ever-present evidence of sheep!
Sensational Timelapse Sequences (8 clips): These are a real highlight and represent significant dedication. Capturing high-quality mountain timelapses requires hours of patience, often in challenging conditions, careful setup, and meticulous post-processing. The results here are, I believe, truly worth it. See a mountain stream burbling past the iconic pyramid of Tryfan; watch clouds boil and roll dynamically through the Ogwen Valley below; witness stunning light changes sweeping across the vast slopes of the Carneddau as the sun moves across the sky. These sequences add a layer of dynamism and beauty that static shots alone cannot convey.
Authenticity Born from Effort
Filming comprehensively in the Carneddau isn't easy. It involves long days of strenuous hiking, carrying heavy camera and camping gear (drone, multiple lenses, tripods, gimbal, tent, sleeping bag, food, safety kit). It means dealing with whatever weather Snowdonia throws at you – which can often be four seasons in one day! It requires navigation skills, mountain awareness, and the resilience to keep going when conditions are tough, or waiting patiently when the light isn't right. It might involve getting your feet wet crossing boggy ground or washing in an icy stream. This pack is the result of that effort, offering footage that is not just visually stunning but also deeply authentic, reflecting the true experience of being out in these magnificent, wild mountains.
Quality, Licensing, and Value
Despite the challenges of capture, the technical quality remains paramount. All footage is delivered in 4K UHD, ensuring maximum detail and flexibility for professional productions. It's captured using high-end equipment by someone with over 17 years of broadcast experience.
Crucially, the licensing is simple and professional-friendly. You pay £2995 for the entire pack of 207 clips. This includes royalty-free use for broadcast television, film, documentaries, commercials, online content, and more, with no extra fees for 4K resolution and no restrictive circulation limits. This represents incredible value compared to licensing individual clips, especially drone or timelapse footage, from major stock platforms.
