Why the f do I own this? The Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG

This is about the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG, one of my favourite lenses.

It’s from the Sigma Art range, and I use it on my Sony A7iii, a full-frame FE mount camera.

Don’t confuse this Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG with the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN.

They’re two different lenses, what’s the difference? More on that is below.

You’ll see me use the Sigma 50mm f1.4 a lot in my adventure videos. Those scenes where I’m putting up my tent with a super shallow depth of field were likely captured using this lens. It creates a wonderful bokeh and separation that I love to use for things like erecting the tent. It also comes in handy on those clear night skies. Mucking around with anything at f1.4 in those conditions is awesome. It handles night skies very well.

Size-wise, it’s quite long for a prime lens, almost like a short telephoto, and it comes in at around 900 grams. Far from small, and fairly heavy, at a whopping 900 grams.

It’s well made though, I’ve given it a good bashing with no problem. Sigma has used some metallic components along with what they call TSC, Thermally Stable Composite. Meaning… well… I’m not sure, but it feels solid enough.

The bokeh at f1.4 is bonkers, and the autofocus is fast, quiet and accurate. Check out some of my tent erections…. like this one, starting at 07:44…..

Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG v Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG DN

This is an old lens, I doubt you’ll find it on Amazon. Try this search, I don’t think they have it any longer.

Sigma has since introduced a new version of the 50mm f1.4 and added those two little letters to it, “DN”.

Honestly, the DN version looks like a much better lens, it’s shorter and lighter, and it has a new clickable aperture ring. I’m a big fan of those.

Sigma also claims that it now has ultra-fast autofocus, as opposed to the hyper-fast autofocus on the DG I’m talking about here. Sounds like BS to me.

The DG DN is just a couple of hundred pounds more expensive, see it here on WEX.

Still considering the original Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG?

And maybe you should be. £200 is £200.

Then check out this video where I walk around my local woodland with it to shoot some stills on a dull dark evening.
